Roman Tarragona and Mediterranean Sitges

Summary

Have a great day out in Roman Tarragona, one of Spain’s oldest cities, founded by Scipio the African in the year 217 BC! Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the city of Tarragona is a monument to over 2,000 years of history. The ancient city of Tarraco became the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Citerior during the Roman Republic. Greatly expanded under the Roman Empire, the city remained the capital city of the largest of the three Roman provinces of the Iberian Peninsula, Hispania Tarraconensis. Reputed to be the birthplace of Pontius Pilate, many of the city’s magnificent Roman monuments still stand, including the walls, the amphitheater, the circus maximus and the praetorium, where the infamous Pilate is said to have been born. Tarragona is also home to a bustling medieval quarter and a colossal cathedral, all covered by the tour.

After, you will head back up the coast stopping off at Sitges, one of the most beautiful former fishing villages of the Catalan coast and once home to many important artists of the Modernist period.

Full Tour Details

You will depart from Barcelona in a comfortable, chauffeur driven vehicle and an official, expert tour guide in search of the distinctive light of Catalonia’s sunny south coast.

Tarragona:

First up is the magnificent 2,000 year old Roman aqueduct at Las Ferreres. Known as ‘The Devil’s Bridge’, this is one of the finest Roman aqueducts still standing. Built in the first century AD to bring water from the Francolí River 25 kilometers away, it was one of three aqueducts serving the ancient city of Tarraco. The more intrepid amongst you may like to walk along the top of the aqueduct; those who suffer from vertigo might want to take a rain check!

Onto the city of Tarragona, the capital of the largest Roman province of the Iberian Peninsula. Beginning your tour on foot at the western gate of the Roman wall, you will have the chance to see a model recreation of how the city looked at the height of the Roman Empire before wandering through the streets of the city’s magnificent medieval quarter.

Sitges:

Leaving Tarragona, you will head up the coast to the picturesque village of Sitges. On foot, you will be able to see for yourselves how what was once a simple fishing village became, and still lives side by side, with a bustling commercial center.

Your first port of call will be Sitges’ iconic church of St Bartholomew and Santa Tecla and its beautiful stairway leading up from the sea. Next up is a walk through the magnificent Maricel Palace and Cau Ferrat. Now a museum, it was once home to Santiago Rusiñol, one of Catalonia’s most famous and eclectic painters of the Modernist era.

Next up is a stroll through the winding, whitewashed walls of the fishermen’s quarter containing many historical buildings, amongst which stand the Modernist style old market, now the House of Bacardi rum. You will learn how rum is made and there will the chance to sample the product of one of the world’s iconic brands.

Your tour will end with visit to Sitges’ High Street and its many stores, before winding up at the terraces and cafés on the seafront promenade.
